7 kW planar transformer for bidirectional CLLC onboard chargers
As EV onboard chargers become smaller, more powerful, and bidirectional, every component has to work harder. And while much of the attention goes to wide-bandgap semiconductors, one of the biggest challenges often lies elsewhere: the magnetics.
At Payton Planar Magnetics, we designed a 7 kW planar transformer for bidirectional CLLC onboard chargers that goes beyond traditional power transfer. By integrating the required leakage inductance directly into the transformer, we help reduce external components, simplify the power stage, and improve manufacturing consistency.
The result? A more compact, efficient, and reliable magnetic solution for next-generation EV charging systems.

This design is just one example of what's possible. Every power converter has its own requirements, which is why we develop custom planar magnetic solutions tailored to each application. Beyond Planar transformers, we can also integrate additional magnetic components, such as inductors or CMC, into a single optimized assembly, helping reduce size, simplify system design, and improve overall performance.
The next generation of power electronics won't be driven by semiconductors alone. It will be enabled by magnetic components that are designed as an integral part of the system, not as an afterthought.
